Can you recompile a Linux package to work on a jailbroken iPhone?

I use Linux on my laptop and although I getting pretty skilled at it I still don't understand it completely but i was wondering sense iOs is Unix-like and Linux is pretty much a freeware clone of UNIX would it be possible to recompile a Linux package to install on a jailbroken iPhone and if so what kind of upgrades would have to be done to the iPhone
